ANREALAGE @ JAPAN HOUSE SP

One month ago it was the opening of Anrealage's exhibition here in Sao Paulo, at our Japan House!

I was invited to go with one of my best friends, but she got sick and couldn't attend the event in the end. =(   It was a great night, so it would have been great if she was there! Yet, I'm really thanful, because I had a chance not only to meet new and great people, but to reconnect with a friend from Architecture School days.

PAPER DAY 5

PAPER DAY 4

So, it's November. The year is almost gone and it's still hard to believe. It has been extremely challenging (but in a good way) and could have been a perfect one if I hadn't to say good bye to my grandma. But I'll keep fighting and living to pass to others everything I had the honour of learning with her. =)

I already knew about Universidade do Papel for a while, but having the chance to work with them was probably THE blessing of the year! Here in Brazil it's the only place totally about paper and its expressions toward techniques and arts. ♥ Its owned by Enrique Rodríguez, an architect and designer from Chile, who developed his whole career using paper and teaches and help other paper designers/artists to find their space.

By the occasion I sent my portfolio to Universidade do Papel, aiming a spot in their exhibition of new illustrators (and, yes, got it!) but Enrique messaged me because of my graduation project and the paper jewelry. He wanted (and still wants) me to give a workshop about the subject at his school.

I was honest and told him I couldn't. Yet. It wasn't a selfish no, but I still learning a lot about my technique and my product, so it's still early to share what I don't know. But I hope to be able to give it back soon enough. ^_^

At Universidade do Papel, once every 2 or 3 months there's an event called Paper Day, in which artists show and sell their expressions on paper and it's always fantastic! I still can't believe I've been there twice and have a 3rd edition coming up in december! To discover these paper artists, I suggest the search of #PaperDayUP in Instagram! It'll be worthy! ♥

Last edition, on 10/21, I took some new pieces, so today I'm sharing the pictures and some comments! =)

Here is my stand! That morning I noticed that my work/production grew up a bit! Because for the 3rd edition of Paper Day this amount of space was enough, this time not at all. I had to leave a sort of box/puff/bench below the table with my bask of illustrations and prints. It was unexpected, but maybe a good sign? =)

Some of the new pieces. For the flat necklace I got some new ones inspired by sacred geometry and for the ones which are 3d, the inspiration was the Möbius strip.

Here some details about the earrings: if you have more than one pierce, you can wear the pair in the same ear as well. The effect is nice, because the paper pieces go behind the ears and they weight basically nothing.

Here you can see a bit of the basket x_x... I'm not sure if I'll be ready ($) to get the double sized space for december, but I hope to find a way. lol

Meow! Now I have some small kittens as pendants and people seem to love them! I'm happy! ♥ For the next Paper Day I'm gonna take some doggos too, to make it fair! Hahahaha

BTW! An online store is coming this month! The plan was to launch it after buying my Eclips2 (here in Brazil every price you see in USD cost us x4 more, so a cutting machine doesn't end being something exactly cheap...), but people are asking for Xmas! But with or withou online store, I swear I don't bite, so you can just message me to ask things/ talk/ order... It will be a pleasure! ♥

FASHION WEEK MARATHON: TASK 4

Things are busy right now, so I'm just taking a moment to share how my Men in Brands - Fashion Marathon is going: right here we have task 4, from Paris Fashion Week. My pick up was Chanel SS19, because Karl Lagerfeld surely knows how to rock up the classics! The collection has a beach vacations feeling, but also has a feeling of "took mom/grandma's clothes and they are a size up from mine".... Hahahaha, who've never? ♥

A NEW LAIR

My babies are back! They were at a store not far away from my home office... But things are advancing so fast that I had no place to store them and my messy lair was even worse than the usual...

So I had to do some changes and now all the paper jewelry has a new and own place! Some mirrors are still missing, but for now it's ok and its compact! I could take this structure to fairs and events! ♥

FLOWER DESIGN AWARD 2018

  So, since the results of Flower Design Award has been shared at Japan Design Week official website, I have no more reasons not to post my own project! Even though it was not the choosen one, I had lots of fun creating it, so I've been restraining myself really hard from post it!

  From the competition page here comes the theme and a bit of background, before I explain my project:

Designboom in collaboration with MATSUYAMA DESIGN WEEK: Participation is open to professionals, students and design enthusiasts from every country in the world.

Theme : FLOWER

Through the flower design award, MATSUYAMA DESIGN WEEK seeks new ideas to promote the city of Matsuyama on a global scale. Submissions can be presented through any design discipline including, art, product, graphic design, and film under the theme of the flower. 

Background: Matsuyama is the largest city on Shikoku, an island located in southwest Japan. It has developed around the Matsuyama castle and is best known for dogo onsen, one of the country’s oldest hot spring resorts. Famed for its literature, Matsuyama is the hometown of famous Haiku poet Masaoka Shiki and great writer Natsume Sōseki. In recent years, it has developed a dense urban fabric and now looks to disseminate creativity both inside and outside of the city’s boundaries. 

  Matsuyama is also known for the flower camellia, which is symbol of the city. So my intention was to put the literature into flowers. In an ideal world, I'd love to quote the city's writers and to create patterns with their texts, but - obviously - there are many copyright issues around it and would only work through a patternship...

  Having in mind that the idea would be to promote the city, instead of using the works of literature, I create a pattern with "Matsuyama City"/ "松山市" - something really basic, but that would work to remind people about the place, since the pattern would be applied in a product. It was thought to look like if it was written/drawn with a black marker, so no fancy calligraphy here - easy to read, without having to think much.

  Bringing more references, Hisui Sugiura was a great japanese designer, also from Matsuyama. And he created many illustrations about flower. And since flower is a keyword (theme of the award, important symbol of the city and theme of work of many professionals) I decided to reimagine a flower (not exactly a camellia though) using my own style: paper art (to the ones who don't know me, I create paper jewelry from watercolor paper). 

  So, the Matsuyama pattern became sort of a lace of words. This lace went by a laser cut process to take the shape of petals. The width of the kanji strokes is 1mm. - as usual for my projects, here we have water color paper.

  Then I started to work the petals to shape the flower. Looking to the pictures, maybe one can't get it, but this is a veeeery handcraft kind of project. Even though it's laser cut - there are tests before finding the right speed and power for every kind of paper and it's necessary to stop the cutting process every time a pice of paper flies... if it stays under or over the main piece, the work can be lost. And during these stops, if the main piece moves a little bit....bye bye as well... waste of time (it takes a good while) and waste of material.  

  Can you see a flower taking shape here? ♥ Remembering that these strokes are 1mm width, they get even more fragile while wet - another reason why it's totally handcraft, but it's still the best way to give a organic touch to the paper without ugly marks.

  Above: pictures after the main flower structure was dry. After a first layer of metallic pigment. Not finished yet...

  A couple in layers later... It actually could be just some decorative piece to stay over one's desk but we've been taking about books...

  Books, books, books? Anyone? Yup, a bookmark, kids! With a pearl in the center of the flower and a wood stick to mark a page. - btw, what a lovely sunny day! ♥ It's winter here though.

  A bookmark is something we always need but not always have it near - then we use a napkin, a piece of paper lost anywhere, a pen, paper clips (dooooooooooon't do it! stop! really, it damages the paper if you forget it there)... Once I saw a friend marking a page with another book inside and I got totally WHT! But, of course, this one could be inside a vase alone, or with many other flower bookmarks, in someone's hair or anywhere instead of inside a book, so it would be a good gift to give someone - the possibilities are infinite. And you would always remember Matsuyama city, because there is the name of the city in the lace patter, because - like the books - it's made of paper and had art in form of text and because it's a flower! ♥
